Battle Sites, 2013

Battle Sites Artist Statement.

My work delves into the notions of history, memory, trauma and presence. These traces of the past are often unbeknownst to us without prior knowledge and research. Battles, and other important historical events, upon which so much throughout history has been shaped, have occurred all over the place, and most of these sites are completely inconspicuous. I am interested in photographing areas that are of significant historical importance and testify to the concept that people are, more often than not, completely unaware of the past events that have taken place on the very ground they stand on. The work I’ve produced provides a juxtaposition between the stereotypical battle site – vast fields and wooded areas, compared with busy, bright and bustling town centre scenes - not an image you would generally conjure up in your mind when thinking of the horrors of a battle. This juxtaposition is further enhanced via my use of google earth imagery. It becomes very apparent that the history and traces are all around us and comparing the different sites I have captured using google provides an interesting insight into the events that once occurred and what now stands in their place.
